Gotham Season 3: 6 Ups And 3 Downs From 'New Day Rising'
1. Fancy A Cuppa?
From his debut the man makes the impossible possible and, in a weird way, actor Ben Samuel did so for the character. This is a rogue who could have been treated as a joke, but Tetch is the best Gotham baddie thus far.
His standout scene this episode involved a strength-tester and a splattered skull. There's a Lewis Carroll quote in which the Hatter states "When that day comes, I shall futterwacken... vigorously." Were the strength-machine shenanigans futterwacking? I wonder what score he got. I'm reigning champ at the game-center down the road; I bet I could take him.
Seeing the subtle twist Gordon gives when Hatter offers to "get rid of that nasty, little impulse" was brilliant acting on both sides. And just remember; he's going to be keeping on the creepiness as an old man. This is a guy who forced his sister to have impure thoughts about him.
Add the tick tock of the clock and Gotham has never been better. The Hatter is the best type of villain, cerebral and smart. Samuel's acting coupled with the directing has made each scene he has featured in incredible and strengthens the actors around him.
There is a place, like no place on earth. A land full of wonder, mystery and danger. Some say to survive it, you need to be as mad as a hatter. Which, luckily, I am. - The Mad Hatter
