Gotham Season 5: 3 Ups & 2 Downs From Trespassers
Ups...
3. The Abandoned City
As noted here, one of the greatest things about Gotham's final season is its choice of narrative. The No Man's Land storyline is the perfect choice for Gotham's swan song, as it demonstrates the city at its worst, highlighting just how much it's in need of a hero. Captain Gordon tries his best, but he's not the symbol of hope that Gotham and its residents crave. The showrunners and writers have expertly set the stage for Batman's arrival with this arc.
In addition to the story advancements that come with No Man's Land, however, is the stunning visuals that accompany the narrative. Even without the Batman connotations, Gotham City has always been a central part of this series' story, and is as important to the narrative as any one of its characters.
The destruction and devastation of said city has allowed for it to play a more integral part in this story, as it's hard not to notice the visual elements - such as the blackouts and the backdrops of previously unexplored areas. In short, these visuals are absolutely essential in creating this almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere that comes with No Man's Land.
