Gotham Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ruin'

2. The Dynamics Between Different Groups Of Characters

Jeremiah and Ecco certainly won the prize for the couple with the most chemistry in Ruin, but surprisingly they weren't the only magnificent pairing in this episode. One of the greatest things about Gotham is how the writers tend to pair several different characters off - whether it be for single mission or a longterm relationship - a creative decision that often allows for interesting dynamics to be explored regularly.

Take Penguin and Gordon, for example. The pair have had a colourful history, what with each of them being on opposite sides of the law. In spite of this, they often interact and, on occasion, team up - much like they did in last week's episode. In Ruin, they were once again in cahoots, which provided not only for much of the humour in this one, but also for plenty of the conflict.

Similarly, Lucius Fox is forced to align himself with former foe Edward Nygma in an attempt to get to the bottom of who was responsible for the explosion at Haven. The two prove to be a great team, and their friendly banter is also something the lightened the otherwise macabre tone of the episode.

Finally, Gordon's exploration of his darker side - which is exacerbated by the absence of law and rules in No Man's Land - results in him being drawn to his ex, Barbara, which is likely an attempt to get the pair together so that, like in the comic canon, she can become the mother of Barbara a.k.a Batgirl.
