Gotham Season 5 Premiere: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From Year Zero

3. Tabitha's Death

Tabitha Death Gotham
Fox

While there are very few low points in Year Zero, one of the more stronger moments sees Tabitha Galavant murdered at the hands of the villainous Oswald Cobblepot. In a series like Gotham, death doesn't often mean anything, as it's very possible to resurrect the victim (or have the actor who portrays said character show up as the evil twin, but that's a matter for another day). However, there is something really significant in the series' decision to kill Tabitha here - it was Stephens' way of highlighting that this is really the end for the show.

Tabitha has overcome odds after odds, villain after villain, and managed to avoid death on numerous occasions thanks to her excellent fighting skills. Having her become nothing more than a casualty of war is genius on Stephens' part, as it highlights how - in a climate such as this one - anyone is expendable, and that no one is safe.

Tabby has been one of Gotham's stronger characters over the years, and Jessica Lucas has portrayed her exceptionally well, which makes her exit extremely hard to watch. Unlike the recent death in The Walking Dead - which happened under similar circumstances - Tabitha's demise does not feel contrived, but rather feels like an important piece of the show's conclusion.
