Gotham Season 5 Premiere: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From Year Zero

2. Jim Gordon's Characterisation

Jim Gordon Gotham
Fox

There have been plenty of unforgettable portrayals of Jim Gordon over the years, from Pat Hingle to Gary Oldman, and each of them have brought something unique to the comic book character. Ben McKenzie is no different. The actor has done a superb job at bringing the future police commissioner to life, and whether you love or hate the Fox series' originality in regards to the Batman mythos, there's little denying that its version of Gordon is one of its greatest attributes.

While Gordon was very much the protagonist when Gotham began, the series has diverged over the years, becoming more of an ensemble piece, with multiple protagonists as opposed to one. While the ensemble vibe is still very much present in Year Zero, the show is once again heavily relying on Gordon, and it's all the better because of this fact.

It's more clearer than ever in this episode that McKenzie embodies this role, and while we'll be sad to bid farewell to every aspect of Gotham, losing one of the greatest portrayals of Batman's police commissioner will be something fans will particularly struggle with.
