Gotham Season 5 Review: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ace Chemicals'

3. The Twist

While none of the episodes included in Gotham's final season have been disappointing, Ace Chemicals ticks more boxes than all its predecessors put together. The plotting is superb, the dialogue is pretty impressive, the action is next to non-stop and the payoff - five years in the making - is truly brilliant. What's not to like?

You'd think all of the aforementioned achievements would be enough to keep viewers entertained, but writer Tze Chun takes things one step further, ensuring that we're left flabbergasted by a shocking - and yet incredibly clever - twist. In an attempt to push Bruce to his limits, Jeremiah reveals that, instead of the people masquerading as Bruce's parents, he would shoot Jim Gordon and Lee Thompkins - both of whom had landed in his lap at the perfect time thanks to some expert plotting.

This twist also paid off really well due to the fact that, as much as Bruce detests the loss of human life, Jeremiah murdering two strangers would have little impact for the future Batman. Replace them with two people he cares about and you've got some incredible conflict there.
