Gotham Season 5 Review: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ace Chemicals'

2. Cameron Monaghan's Award-Worthy Performance

Gotham Season 5 Jeremiah Valeska
Fox

Cameron Monaghan continually earns praise for his performances in Gotham, which is no surprise given everything he's accomplished on the Fox series to date. It makes no odds if he's portraying Jerome or Jeremiah, as the young actor has truly given a hundred and ten percent to both characters.

Portraying an early version of The Joker was undoubtedly a tough task for Monaghan, as the origin of the Clown Prince of Crime is something that, in a lot of Batman adaptations in the past, has been shrouded in mystery. Despite this, he's managed to forge two incredibly brilliant characters, both of which have borrowed different traits from different Jokers.

Although he's been brilliant the whole way through the Fox series' run, Monaghan truly shines in Ace Chemicals. From his facial expressions, to his delivery of certain lines, the young talent delivers a truly nuanced performance in this instalment. Without a doubt his greatest work on the show to date. At one stage, we're even able to empathise with Jeremiah, due to Monaghan's portrayal of the character.

In short, if the Emmys were ever to honour a performance in a superhero-inspired series, then no one would deserve a nomination - and a win - more than Monaghan. Utterly sublime.
