"This begins and ends with you and me!"

The Penguin's statement to Commissioner Gordon as he attempted to kill him couldn't have been more appropriate, given that Oswald had dragged his "old friend" back to the very same pier that they stood on back in Gotham's first episode. Though the roles were reversed this time, this was a thrilling callback to how it all began for them both and highlighted just how far they had come in the 15 years in between.

This, however, wasn't the finale's only reference to where it all started, as it was bookended by two more callbacks to the pilot episode.

"The Beginning..." opened with the show's Season 1 title card, abandoning the No Man's Land-themed Season 5 intro. It then closed with Alfred reciting Gordon's hopeful message to Bruce from the pilot, in which the GCPD rookie had promised the young boy that "There will be light" - a fitting sentiment to herald Batman's arrival.
