As previously mentioned, what Gotham City was like before the arrival of the Dark Knight has been explored before through several mediums. The Gotham known the most to the mainstream audience is the one presented in Batman Begins, a city ruled completely by corruption and crime even before the Waynes were murdered. The difference between that and Gotham though, and where its uniqueness lies, is giving an extended look at how Gotham City was shaped by the murders and affected the lives of more people than Bruce Wayne. This in-depth exploration of Gotham during Bruces youth gives the show an advantage over other stories as that time period has never fully been explored before, but given very brief glimpses. There is a huge amount of potential to see firsthand the domino effect the Wayne murders had on every facet of the city through the eyes of multiple characters rather than solely through Bruces. It should surely put a new spin on this time period, but the expectations are understandably very high since Gotham has the likes of Batman Begins, Year One and Zero Year to contend with in telling tales of Gotham City before Batman. Gotham will really have to rely on its unique factor in order to live up to those expectations.
