Something which is building the hope around Gotham is the fact it seems to be taking bits and pieces from multiple stories in the source material and making it its own thing. There are hints of Batman: Earth One, Year One and Penguin: Pain and Prejudice among other stories, but the one fans are most excited to see is the influence Gotham Central has on the series. Gotham Central was a fan-favourite comic written by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka which focused on the cops and detectives in service to Gotham. Batman and his cohorts hardly appeared in this series as the focus remained on characters in the GCPD, giving insight rarely seen into how other officers felt about Batman taking the law into his own hands. Gotham seems to run in the similar vein with a strong focus on the polices efforts to control the city through corruption or battling that very same corruption. Many comic fans also know of the turbulent times Gordon had throughout his time as an officer or lieutenant; as one of the few honest cops in Gotham he had very few allies and people he could trust, often being blocked from doing his job effectively by corrupt cops or mobsters. The trailer hints heavily at Gordon being tempted by those forces to either let things slide or take the law into his own hands in ways Batman never would. The focus on the Gotham police will certainly give this show a unique perspective and offer great insight into how corruption took over so much within their ranks.
