Identity Crisis was an extremely divisive DC comic event that tried to shake up the core of what it meant to be a superhero. Essentially the plot breaks down into a simple choice several Justice League members made in regards to the villain Doctor Light. He had learned the identities of the Justice League, as well as their loved ones, and threatened unspeakable acts if he ever escaped.

This forced the heroes to use magic in order to wipe the memory of Doctor Light and several members of the Secret Society of Super-Villains. They also wiped Batman's memory, who was incredibly against the abuse of magic to wipe someone's memory and alter their personality.

The consequences for wiping Light's mind came to a head in the post-Identity Crisis story, "Heading Into the Light." During this, Doctor Light regained his memories and targeted Green Arrow, beating him up and taking the hero hostage in order to draw in not only Speedy but his new teammates the Teen Titans.

The conflict grew so large that every single hero who had ever been a Titan appeared to save Oliver. However, other than Cyborg, they were all brutally defeated by Doctor Light's powers, and Ollie could only sit there and watch as an action he took led to others not even involved in Identity Crisis getting severely hurt.
