Happy Together Season 1: 3 Ups & 1 Down From 'Scrubbing'
Downs...
1. The Elderly Gag Is Quickly Growing Tired
While the show certainly deserves to be commended for its strong writing and humour in the second episode, there is one particular joke that's already starting to show signs of ageing (pun intended).
The fact that Jake and Claire feel irrelevant and not cool when in Cooper's company is fine, and their incessant desire to impress him is also one of the show's strongest attributes, but the fact that - when the two characters are on their own - they're going on as if they are twice their age is a bit of a stretch. It's okay to feel old, but the show needs to remember that Jake and Claire are not actually elderly, and thus having them behaving like this is coming off as contrived.
This shouldn't be a problem if the series continues to develop the central characters, because after re-discovering who they really are, Jake and Claire have no need to feel unimportant any longer. However, this is a sitcom we're talking about here, and they are notoriously bad at continuity. In other words, don't be surprised if Claire and Jake are complaining of back pain in the next instalment.
