Happy Together Season 1: 3 Ups & 1 Down From 'Scrubbing'
1. Character Development
While the writers never miss a comedic beat, making sure they're keeping their audience in stitches for the whole duration of the episode, there is plenty of room for a bit of character development also. In relation to the scrubbing storyline, Jake and Claire are able to come to terms with the fact that they've been living rather mundane lives as of late, and vow to change things for the better.
We're too busy laughing to notice this at first, but upon reflection it's pretty clear that Claire and Jake are developing. What's more, this development is a direct result of Cooper's presence in their home. Had it not been for the young pop star and his worldly ways, the married couple would likely have never changed their way of life. Instead of making them feel irrelevant, Cooper is actually inspiring Jake and Claire to strive for more out of life. It's very clever on the writers' part. It's becoming more and more apparent that Happy Together is a lot smarter than people give it credit for.
