Happy Together Season 1 Premiere: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Pilot'
2. It's Got Heart
Another thing that many modern sitcoms lack is heart. While comedies aren't necessarily meant to be riddled with conflict and drama, a little touch of these components goes a long way. If there's no source of conflict, then our protagonists aren't really human, are they? Furthermore, they would have no reason to get angry, and if they don't get angry then there's very little chance that they're going to give us that humour that we crave.
Happy Together, thankfully, has the right amount of heart. The characters are all believable and - to some degree - relatable. The predicament in which Jake and Claire find themselves is what ultimately strengthens their relationship. Similarly, Cooper becomes more down-to-earth after spending time in their company. Characters grow, in spite of the circumstances remaining the same. It's all very clever on the writers' part.
It might be a comedy show, but if audiences don't care about the characters, then there's no reason to keep watching.
