HBO's MaddAddam: 5 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 5 Reasons It Could Suck)
5 Reasons It Could Suck:
5. Darren Aronofsky Is A Questionable Director
Darren Aronofsky is a wild card. Sure, Black Swan and The Wrestler were great, but they were a while ago now and Aronofsky served as director only. The last film he wrote and directed was Noah, an adaptation of the ubiquitous Bible story. Except its not though, is it? The source material may have needed a touch of padding, but Noah caused controversy among religious communities because there was very little mention of God, despite the story being about God killing all the sinners. Aronofsky brought a lot of creativity into the re-telling of Noah as an action-hero environmentalist, but that wont necessarily work for something like MaddAddam. In addition to that, Aronofsky has no experience with the small screen. Making a feature film is one thing, but a TV mini-series based on a series of books with very devoted fans is quite another. This is not to say Aronofsky doesnt have the skill or resources to do it. Hes clearly a talented man, but when choosing someone to adapt a legendary set of books to the small screen, wouldnt you prefer someone with a bit of TV experience, like, say, Vince Gilligan, to do it?
