HBO's MaddAddam: 5 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 5 Reasons It Could Suck)
3. Oryx & Crake Will Be Very Hard To Film
Lets be honest loves, the majority of Oryx and Crake is just a self-consciously unshowered man moping about in a treehouse. The MaddAddam trilogy has a lot of characters, environments, and action, but the beginning of the series is a whole lot of nothing. Somehow reading about Snowman sulking because he believes himself to be the last man on Earth is quite entertaining and even humourous, but this could get old very quickly on-screen. Oryx and Crake sets up the desolation and new loneliness of the world to the reader, and this will be difficult to establish with just a camera. Aside from that, a lot of the novel involves Snowman telling The Crakers stories which are often pure nonsense. He also has several dreams and flashbacks about his time with Oryx and Crake, some which are lucid and some not so much. These appear to be half-backstory and half-wild imagination as Snowman is slowly losing his mind (although you probably would if the world had been obliterated, wouldnt you?) When Snowman finally starts out on a mission its because hes taken half the book psyching himself up to do it, which just wouldnt work on film. The MaddAddam triology is chock-a-block with excitement, but Oryx and Crake will arguably offer a very slow start.
