HBO's MaddAddam: 5 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 5 Reasons It Could Suck)
2. The Crakers Could Be Awful
Even in this day and age, its a pretty tall order creating humanoid yet not-quite-human creatures on-screen. Just look at the monkeys from Tim Burtons Planet of the Apes. Look at them! Sure, that was back in 2001 (and it doesnt help that monkeys are creepy as all hell anyway) but even since then effects teams dont quite have a handle on it. The monkeys in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes may have looked better, but because they looked like actual recognisable apes rather than a combination of man and ape. The Crakers are a humanoid race created by Crake (surprisingly) who wanted to essentially create humans, but without all the faff of feelings etc. As such they arent based on any animal except us, so the parameters cant be adjusted to make them less embarrassing looking, like the more ape-like animals in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. To make things worse, the Crakers are perpetually nude. The men have long blue penises and the women parade around with bright blue backsides when aroused (which happens distressingly often). You can get away with this written on a page, but in all their glory on-screen, depicting the Crakers could be an absolute disaster.
