His Dark Materials: 10 Things The TV Series Must Get Right
5. Have Fun With The Dæmons
Who doesn't want a dæmon? They're a loyal companion that, up until a certain age, can take the shape of animal in the world, and then settle into something that reflects your personality, and stay with you for the rest of your life. You'll picture it being some fantastic mythical or bad-ass creature, but in truth it's probably just a cat or a dog. But that's still fine, because it's a cat or dog capable of human thought and speech, and they won't die, and you don't have to clean up any mess. While they'd still make a great companion once you've grown-up, let's be honest: the most fun is when they're changing forms. Thankfully, this period does last a while, and it's something the show can really have fun with. They can introduce a wide-array of dæmons, and really play around with the visuals of them changing into all manner of animals, big and small, real and fictional.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
