From: And Maggie Makes Three (Season 6, Episode 13) While Homer may be one of the funniest characters on television, what makes him so great is that his buffoonery isn't the only aspect to him, as already shown in this list by his devotion to Marge and his rapport with Bart and Lisa. However, the moment that best exemplifies Homer's heart is one involving the most forgotten Simpson; baby Maggie. Even though Homer himself occasionally fails to recall his youngest child, this beautiful scene shows that underneath it all, Homer isn't just a walking disaster, he's also a terrific father. Before Maggie was born, the Simpsons had achieved perfect financial balance so Homer was finally able to give up the drudgery of work at the nuclear plant. However, when the third Simpson child came along, Homer had to go back. Mr Burns, known for crushing the spirit out of his workers, places a plaque in Homer's workstation, reading 'Don't Forget, you're here forever.' It may be hard work but it is revealed that Homer gets through it thanks to the love of his kids - with photos of Maggie plastered on the walls, the plaque now reads: 'Do it for her.' This moment shows that compared to every other beloved animated character (Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, even Homer's spiritual predecessor Fred Flintstone) Homer is above them all because he marries his cartoon comedy hijinks with real heart. The Simpsons may be a good old-fashioned 2-D animated show but, at his best, its star character, Homer, is a three-dimensional real person. This ingenious scene about a very real fact of life, how we sometimes have to sacrifice our dreams for our loved ones, could only concern this single cartoon character, which is why it is has to be Homer Simpson's greatest moment.
