House Of Cards: 10 Questions That Must Be Answered In Season 4
5. Will It Explore More Of Frank's Sexuality?
House of Cards hasn't particularly shied away from including sex on the show, whether it's between Frank and Claire, or any other characters. But the most memorable moment came when Frank and Claire engaged in a threesome with his bodyguard, a man. Up until this point there hadn't been a mention of Frank's sexuality, so it was a surprise to viewers, although an understandable approach. As Beau Williams, the showrunner, explained: "He's a man with a large appetite...I think hes incredibly guarded with who he lets get close to him, whether thats platonic or whether thats sexual. And when he does, its not necessarily a gender or preference, it really has to do with trust." It's an interesting approach, when many characters can often be defined by their sexuality, and I don't think it's something that necessarily needs clearing up; there's sexual ambiguity, so just let that be case. Nevertheless, will they unveil more of it? Because while they don't need to label him as gay or straight, if they're continually fleshing out his character, then they could use that as a way of understanding him further, and it's something that could come into play given the state of his relationship with Claire, and prominent but precarious position as, well, the President of the United States.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
