House Of The Dragon - Every Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best
3. Aemond Targaryen
Ever since House of the Dragon was announced, one of the most eagerly anticipated sequences amongst die hard George RR Martin fans was the Dance over Shipwater Bay; Aemond and Vhagar's murder of Rhaenyra's son Lucerys and his dragon Arrax, the flashpoint that kicked off the Dance of the Dragons.
Game of Thrones had a Kingslayer, meet House of the Dragon's Kinslayer. Unquestionably the most intriguing male character in House of the Dragon not named Daemon Targaryen, Aemond One-Eye's tragically unintentional complicity in the killing of his nephew Lucerys - murdered by an enraged Vhagar in a fit of pique - is the latest dark twist in the story of the enigmatic Targaryen Prince.
Several of the show's best scenes have been Aemond centric. His claiming of the legendary Vhagar was critically acclaimed while the Prince's transformation from a sullen little boy into the menacingly unpredictable warrior and dragon-rider who stands before audiences has been an absolute spectacle to watch, brought to life in exemplary fashion by Ewan Mitchell, the greatest casting change to come out of the show's time jump.
The shockingly unexpected nature of HBO's twist on events adds an even further gripping sub-plot to Aemond's storyline. The usually menacing Prince is visibly shaken and remorseful in the aftermath of Lucerys' death and it will be fascinating to see how his development proceeds as a result. Will he callously play Luke's death off as a malicious act of revenge against Rhaenyra or remorsefully take responsibility for his calamitous actions?
Viewers never know with Aemond and that is what makes him such a fascinating addition to HBO's on-screen Westerosi ranks.
