How I Met Your Mother: 10 Legendary Barney Moments

8. "Please..."

Barney Hot Crazy Scale
CBS

Barney's occupation is a running gag throughout the entire series. He never reveals what it is he does, and what audiences do get to see adds to the mystery. Marshall mentions Barney's large amount of keys, he's often seen talking to foreign businessmen, and he references major lawsuits and relationships with North and South Korea.

Still, his job remains shrouded in hilarious mystery. That is, until Season Nine's "Unpause", where he becomes so drunk that he cannot bring himself to tell a lie. And when Ted finally asks him what he does for a living, he says, as is his trademark whenever he's asked: "Please." It turns out though that this actually is an acronym for his job: he signs ambiguous documents for a big corporate companies so they can't take the fall for their own crimes.

The legendary part, though? Barney's spent his entire career colluding with the FBI about his superiors in a bid to get back at his boss and love rival, Greg. It's a fantastic, crazy reveal which manages to be both genuinely funny and gratifying. And it shows just how intelligent he really is.
