How I Met Your Mother: 10 Legendary Barney Moments
6. Cupid
One of How I Met Your Mother's most memorable and sad storylines sees Marshall and Lily break up at the end of Season One. Lily moves to San Francisco to pursue her art career, and Marshal wallows in self-pity for much of Season Two's first half. As he begins to perk up, however, he becomes open to talking to women and becomes Barney's new wing-man.
The scenario makes for some classic sitcom shenanigans, as Marshall keeps having girls taken away from him by the more seasoned bachelor. Later, though, in the episode "Bachelor Party", Lily reveals to the gang that Barney went to San Francisco to bring her back to Marshall, and told her not to tell anyone about his trip.
It's one of the show's earliest examples of how multi-layered and truly loving and sweet Barney could be, and the passing reference to him constantly stealing women from Marshal - because he believes Lily and Marshall belong together - is a nice touch to an otherwise playful and fun storyline.
