How I Met Your Mother: 10 Simple Fixes That Would Have Saved The Ending

4. The Mother Lives

Let's just take a moment to praise easily the most impressive part of Season 9: Cristin Milioti. The lynchpin of the series turned many of parts of Season 9 from dire to delightful on multiple occasions. The other standouts of the season, namely the episode How Your Mother Met Me and the climactic meeting between Ted and the Mother, were carried by the easy chemistry between the two and the amazing abilities of Cristin Milioti. The connection she formed between the viewers and her character proved, at times, stronger than that of characters we've known for nine years. With that in mind, the Mother, whose name is revealed to be Tracy McConnel, really has a very distressing ending. She dies. Yes, you read that correctly. How I Met Your Mother ends with the Mother dying. Sure, there were hints within the series of her untimely death, but the abruptness and nonchalance with which it was handled proved utterly misguided. The woman you saw deal with loss, the woman you cried with when she sang La Vie En Rose, the woman Ted has been waiting for his entire life dies. And, just as quickly, the series moves on. Partially, this is because of the crunch for time, but this is such an easy fix, it's near impossible to see why the creators didn't think of this. Oh, wait - they did. An alternate ending where the Mother lives exists on the DVD. Erase the death ending from your memory banks as soon as you can.
