Barney Stinson causes a bit of a hiccup with the ratings. Robin, Lily and Ted are all incredibly flawed, sometimes annoying and selfish creations who make a lot of mistakes, and honestly Barney is even more of a mess than any of them.
He's selfish, manipulative and even cruel at times. But here's the thing - aside from being the funniest character on the show, he also has the best development and he's the only one to escape the finale with a solid conclusion.
Yes, as a person Barney is awful most of the time, but seeing him go from narcissistic playboy to man genuinely searching for love and commitment was a fantastic development which gave birth to some of the show's most striking moments.
Plus, he's just too funny. His cocky demeanor, Neil Patrick Harris's energetic performance and Barney's endlessly quotable one-liners all work together to make him the best character to come out of the show.
