How I Met Your Mother: Every Season Finale Ranked Worst To Best

Season nine is unanimously agreed to be the worst of the show, but the season eight finale Something New sure made it look like that wouldn't be the case.

An episode that's almost entirely drama, save for Barney and Robin's comical feud with an obnoxious couple who ruin their date night, the finale has Lily learn that Ted's secretly moving to Chicago, and deals with Marshall's struggle over accepting a lucrative job offer despite his and Lily's plans to move to Italy.

Something New is an episode of horrible confrontations, as Ted grapples with his desire for a fresh start and Marshall decides to put his career above Lily's, though it balances them out with Barney and Robin's B-plot, which ends with a genuinely sweet little twist.

The episode ends with the characters making their way to the wedding venue, all deep in the knowledge that things are about to get messy in their personal lives, and caps everything off by finally revealing The Mother on-screen for the first time. It doesn't get any better than that.
