Ted’s relationship with Robin was the heartbeat of the entire series, but it took nine seasons before their romance made any sense. From the pilot episode onwards, Ted wanted to find his wife, have a family, and settle down, whereas Robin wanted to explore the world, experience culture, and pursue professional success. It wasn’t until the series finale that both characters had achieved their intentions and could pursue romance without either one of them having to make sacrifices.

Ted and Robin had an on- again, off- again relationship throughout the series. For the most part, they were an extremely compatible pair, constantly laughing with one another and challenging each other to grow. At times, their relationship put a strain on their friendship and the dynamics of their gang, so much so that Lily resorted to influencing their break up in the second season. During later seasons of the show, Ted struggled with his feelings for Robin, particularly during the lead up to her wedding with Barney- a marriage that made little to no sense.

It remains unclear what Ted’s feelings were for Robin whilst he was married, although following her divorce from Barney in the penultimate episode, Robin tells Lily that she believes Ted was the man she should have wed. It turned out that the story being told was truly about Robin, but when it comes to partners for Ted Mosby, not even she can hold a candle to Ted’s perfect partner.
