How I Met Your Mother: The Worst Things Each Main Character Has Done

4. Lily Aldrin - Left Marshall To Go To San Francisco

From almost stabbing someone in the heart to breaking someone's heart, next in the list is that iconic moment from How I Met Your Mother when Lily leaves New York to pursue her career as an artist in San Francisco.

In the season one finale titled Come On, Marshall discovers that Lily has been accepted for an art scholarship in San Francisco which would overlap with their wedding. Lily tells Marshall that she isn't interested but secretly is desperate to go and see whether or not she could make it as a real artist. This triggers a series of arguments between the loved up couple and ends with Marshall sitting in the rain holding Lily's engagement ring.

Although Lily deserved to follow her passion and find out for certain whether she had the talent to become an artist, there was certainly a better way of handling the situation.

Not only does this moment come out of left field for Marshall, but he never truly gets over this betrayal as he frequently refers to it throughout the 9 seasons of the show.
