Never in the history of television as a character been put through so much. What happened to Father Matthew Mara makes what happened to Reek in Game of Thrones look like a kid's show.

As a man of the cloth, Matthew still harboured strong, lifelong feelings for Dee. Nicknamed Rickety Cricket due to his leg braces as a child, Cricket reconnects with Dee in season two and denounces his role for another chance of love. Her rejection causes the single most devastating character arc in TV history.

Having lost everything, Cricket ends up on the streets, where he soon becomes addicted to drugs and alcohol. With his life a mess, he often finds himself roped into the gang's schemes, who hold no responsibility for his plight. This has seen him have his legs broken by the Mob, lose sight in one eye, have his throat slashed by Frank and be locked in a burning flat.

The man became the walking epitome of tragedy and in season twelve, even has his own episode: A Cricket's Tale. The only offset to how depressing the Cricket character is is how amazing David Hornsby is in the role and every episode that involves Cricket is a blast. The scene where he talks about faking it on the streets is lung bustingly funny.
