Kate Mulgrew Returns To Star Trek

Kate Mulgrew has announced that she will be returning to the Star Trek franchise, Deadline reports. Mulgrew explained, during the NYCC live panel on Star Trek:

I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.

Ramsey Naito, President of Nickoldeon Animation, had this to say about Mulgrew's return:

We can’t wait to see her bring this character to life in a whole new way, while continuing to be an inspiration for both new and loyal fans.

Mulgrew played Captain Kathryn Janeway in 170 episodes of Star Trek Voyager and made a cameo appearance in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. Since the return of Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard was announced at NYCC 2018, audiences have speculated what this might mean for the franchise as a whole. The return of Mulgrew to the role of Janeway will be the first time in almost twenty years that she will have donned the Starfleet uniform, so to speak.

Developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago) and overseen for Nickelodeon by Naito, Star Trek: Prodigy follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.

The show is aimed at a target audience of children from 5 - 15, according to Mulgrew. Janeway will something of a guide and caring figure, while the show's main focus will be on the children to establish themselves as inspiring new characters in the Star Trek franchise.

More casting news will be announced in the coming months, as it is revealed.
