Secondly, it was uncertain what to expect when Melanie made her way up to the sitting room in the beginning of Chapter 4. However, it's pretty safe to say that no one expected to see a subtly glowing apparition wearing an old-timey diving suit standing in front of the window before disappearing. Melanie seemed to know what it meant, which would later be confirmed, however, the audience was left utterly perplexed as to exactly who or what that was. Especially considering fact that the appearance of such a being had yet to be alluded to.
After all, David was the one prone to seeing strange things, not Melanie. Plus, it was incredibly vague as to if this ghostly diver was hostile or friendly. You just had to deal with the fact that he was there now.
