Locke & Key Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

5. The Key Gimmick Is Fantastic
Easily the best and most distinctive aspect of the show is its central gimmick, whereby the Lockes come into possession of a series of keys allowing them to, for example, teleport to locations they've visited before, turn into a ghost, control other people, change their appearance, or best of all, enter their own mind.
Even with the show's many dramatic missteps - namely characters not using the keys when it'd make sense to - the keys themselves are compellingly weird enough to keep things on just the right side of interesting.
A good deal of thought and creativity has clearly gone into representing the keys on-screen, and though the rules of each key might not always be 100% clear to either the audience or the characters, they nevertheless give the Lockes (and their enemies) a dynamic array of powers to make use of.
