After much consideration and reconsideration, I decided to kick off the list with his gut busting bit, 'Fountains and Pedophiles.' This joke showcases and relies on Louis's knack for character work, resulting in a joke that sees the comedian changing personalities and voices in the blink of an eye. Character work, if executed well, can be an extremely effective way to hook and please your audience, but it works two ways. If your character work feels jarring, out of place, or strikes the wrong chord, you'll lose your audience and possibly damage your career. Anyone who can confidently and jokingly spend 4 minutes talking about pedophiles building erotic fountains basically has complete control over any crowd. It's one of those things people think is funny, but won't openly admit it's funny. One of the most impressive aspects of Louis's material is and always has been the space he creates for his audience.
