Love, Victor Season 2 Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs

Love, Victor was one of 2020's most refreshing TV dramas.

A spin-off of the equally groundbreaking movie Love, Simon, the Hulu series told the story of high school student Victor Salazar as he struggled with his sexuality, fearing that his religious family wouldn't accept him if they knew the truth. Though a little safe for some, the show was praised for offering up an uplifting yet authentic coming out story while also tackling issues that Love, Simon did not. Moreover, it was instant success for Hulu so it was only a matter of time until a second season followed.

That second season has arrived and things at Creekwood are quite different: Victor and Benji are in a happy relationship (as are Lake and Felix), Mia has left town for the summer and Victor's parents are attempting to accept their son for who he is. Naturally, drama soon follows... but does it pack as much of a punch as its predecessor?

Love, Victor dares to defy a little more in its second season and with that comes some familiar TV tropes that threaten to undercut its story. However, it also produces a compelling look at the lesser-seen second chapter of the coming out story and it ultimately succeeds because it maintains that one thing that made its first season such a joy: Heart.
