Love, Victor Season 2 Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs
Downs...
3. Too Many Love Triangles!
One of the main reasons that Love, Victor's second season succeeds in so many areas is its subversive nature. It doesn't always rely on traditional story beats to move things along and even surprises you in places (which we'll get to shortly). However, as the season moves on, it gets bogged down in love triangle after love triangle and it all begins to feel so, for lack of a better term, familiar.
The partially-forced conflict between Victor and Benji leads to the former finding more than just a friend in the lovable Rahim (in spite of the fact that they had about three interactions), Lake and Felix keep pleasantly surprising us until they are cruelly ripped apart just to be paired with other people and Victor's father wants to start seeing another woman after indicating that he wanted to rekindle what he had with his wife.
Some of it pans out nicely but a lot of it relies on the aforementioned forced conflict while some of the other developments just feel completely unearned. It's not enough to upend a good season but it does leave you feeling like you know these characters a little less when we should, in fact, know them more.
One love triangle would have been pushing it... but three?
