MacGyver Season 3 Premiere: 8 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Improvise'

6. The Significant Improvement With The CGI

MacGyver Season 3 Ep 1
CBS

One of the only problems MacGyver has had in the past is the dodgy CGI. While it did slightly improve during the second season, some of the explosions in the first left much to be desired. However, the special effects department deserve to be commended, because the improvement in Improvise is rather surprising.

The parachuting sequence is the primary use of computer generated imagery in the episode, and what a spectacular scene it is. It ups the ante and keeps us glued to our seats (more on that later), but the most amazing thing about it is how expertly it was executed. We're assuming actors Lucas Till and Tate Donovan didn't actually jump out of an aeroplane mid-flight (although you never quite know with this show), but it was very hard to tell that from watching the scene in question. The editing is also exceptional during this sequence, and it highlights the excellent direction from Stephen Herek.
