5. Martini
Roger Sterling stays true to his spirit of choice, vodka, as another cocktail he frequently drinks is the classic martini, although they are enjoyed by most characters on Mad Men. Martinis are usually made with gin but, like the Gimlet, it can be interchanged with vodka at will. The distinctive glass and addition of olives make it one of the most easily recognisable drinks there is. Martinis are classy for a reason, and it's not just James Bond. The martini is unsullied by complications or mixers, doing exactly what it says on the tin. Fancy a glass of gin? Have your glass of gin and call it a martini. Not only that but you avoid the awkwardness of sharing bar snacks, or even the bother of having to reach them. No more distracting your guests so that you can bolt down half the nibbles, have them in your drink! Just make sure you remember: the more olives in your drink, the more of a grown up you are.
Ingredients: 75ml gin or vodka 45ml dry vermouth Olives (lots)
Preparation: Rinse a glass with the vermouth, then pour in chilled gin. Garnish with an olive. Alternatively you can do a Noel Coward and fill a glass with gin, then wave it in the direction of Italy.
