6. Manhattan
The Manhattan is a true classic cocktail. Surprisingly our Mad Men drink it fairly infrequently (considering the amount of drinking on this show), but was a firm favourite during the period up until the present day. The Manhattan is the Martini's metaphorical older brother - similar in appearance, the Manhattan uses rye whiskey over fairer spirits to give it a fruity, spicy, and more sophisticated kick. If you don't have any rye whiskey lying around then pretty much any bourbon or other whiskey (or whisky) will do, and there are plenty of other variations depending on what's in your drinks cabinet. Replacing the whiskey with brandy or Southern Comfort makes a nice twist, or mix in equal parts sweet and dry vermouth and garnish with a lemon twist. However if you prefer a classic, follow the recipe below.
Ingredients: 60ml whiskey 15ml sweet vermouth 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters Maraschino cherry
Preparation: Stir ingredients together and garnish with the cherry.
