Making A Murderer: 6 Developments In The Avery Case Since It Debuted

5. The White House Responds To A Petition To Pardon Avery

Avery and Dassey have received an outpouring of support from around the world since Making A Murderer hit Netflix, and a number of those who have rallied their side took to the official White House website to petition to US government into issuing a pardon. As the petition exceeded the 100,000 signatures required for an official reply, Barack Obama€™s administration was forced to issue a statement explaining how the government only has the power to pardon federal prisoners. "Thank you for signing a We The People petition on the Teresa Halbach murder case, currently featured on the Making A Murderer documentary series," it reads. "A pardon in this case would need to be issued at the state level by the appropriate authorities.€ A similar petition on Change.org has amassed more than 400,000 signatures so far.
