Something that could serve to divide both the show’s audience and critics alike would be an over-focus on the more cerebral aspects of the series’ plot, such as questioning the nature of dreams and reality.

Black Mirror, one of Netflix’s most popular original series, provides a masterclass in how to deal with these existential kinds of questions effectively. Although it doesn’t shy away from these themes, it tries to avoid focusing too heavily on them and instead allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

This is a much-preferred method which is much less likely to alienate the show’s more casual viewers and is certainly the best way forward for Maniac as it attempts to build an audience and gain both critical and commercial success.
