6. Ward And Joy Meachum Are Bland

Iron Fist Review 2
David Giesbrecht/Netflix

Ward and Joy Meachums, the pair who have assumed control of Rand Enterprises in the absence of Danny and following the 'death' of their father, Harold, aren't exactly villains.

They aren't good guys either, but stand somewhere in the middle; one minute they're willing to work with Danny, the next having him followed and attacked. And yet still, bafflingly, he trusts them.

It's a good thing they aren't the major antagonists though, because the pair of them are really bland. Ward is the more sinister of the two, a guy who used to pick on Danny as a kid and still hasn't fully grown up, but he's little more than a boardroom brat with daddy issues.

Joy is more sympathetic towards her long-lost friend, but then switches gears between help and hindrance (or even harm) that it's tough to get a good read on her, and neither of them are characters you can care about or invest much in.

Their father, Harold, is more interesting. His character has the back-from-the-dead thing going on too, except he has to remain hidden away and no one can know about it. David Wenham (Lord of the Rings) does a good job of making him a slightly more layered character, and there's a cunning and air of malevolence to him that makes him more compelling than his children.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
