Marvel's Iron Fist Review: 3 Ups And 7 Downs
6. Sloppy Action Sequences
With the promise of a martial arts heavy show, combined with the great action of the Netflix Marvel shows to date (especially in Daredevil), hopes were understandably high for the fight sequences in Iron Fist. Even if other areas didn't convince, surely this was an easy win.
Apparently not. The action scenes are the worst this universe has offered up to this point, and even ignoring what came before stand as badly choreographed and terribly edited scenes.
Part of the issue is that Jones isn't good enough in these scenes, and the fact his character doesn't wear a mask makes it slightly harder to replace him with a stuntman. That leads to a lot of choppy editing, where we see fights from all sorts of different angles, which ultimately results in seeing very little at all. The fight styles themselves are quite slow, and contrast horribly with the quick cuts offered up here, meaning there's little impact to most of the action.
It's a shame, since it has some real potential for brilliant action sequences - Danny battling through various opponents offered up by Gao is a great concept, but not as well realised - yet very rarely delivers.
