Marvel's Iron Fist Review: 3 Ups And 7 Downs

4. Not Really Showing Any Of K'un-Lun

As is stated constantly throughout the series, Danny survived the plane crash and was raised in K'un-Lun, one of the Seven Capitals of Heaven that is only open to this dimension once a decade. It's here that he was trained to fight, here that he became the Iron Fist and learned that he had to defeat the Hand.

Which would all be well and good, if we ever got to see the bloody place. The show very much employs a tell, don't show attitude when it comes to the mystical land, which feels like one of the series' biggest missed opportunities.

Exploring K'un-Lun in detail could've helped us know more about both Danny and the Iron Fist, which might've helped us care more about him and certainly understand what it is he's got to do, why he's back now, and why he left K'un-Lun behind.

Instead, while we hear (to varying degrees) about those things, we don't get to see it for ourselves. There are a few very brief moments of flashback, such as snippets of Danny's upbringing there, and some footage played by Bakuto of a previous Iron Fist in action.

Seeing more of that would've been cool, exploring K'un-Lun could've given the series some much needed visual pizzaz, and most of all seeing the trials Danny had to go through to become the Iron Fist would've rounded out his character a lot more and better sold the idea of the character. To add insult to injury, when we do finally have Danny decide to head there, he discovers it's disappeared, leaving us on an underwhelming (and quite literal) cliffhanger.
