Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 Review: 6 Ups And 4 Downs
5. The Excellent Direction
Although it might have some problems with the plot, Jessica Jones Season 2 consistently looks pretty darn great.
A lot has been made of the fact that every episode is directed by a different woman and, while that alone is admirable, what's really great is that those involved manage to advance that visual language of the show and have it feeling cohesive, while adding their own touches here and there.
The best-directed episode, and the best overall, is Jennifer Lynch's AKA Three Lives and Counting, which has some neat trickery involving Kilgrave, but there are gorgeous moments and thrills throughout: the suspenseful sequence where Simpson returns at the end of episode two, the strange yet evocative sex-on-paint in episode six, and the fiery action in the finale.
There's a moody atmosphere and, when Jessica is doing P.I. work the show goes harder than ever before into its noir style, but balances it with more outdoor shots than last year too, allowing us more moments of brightness within the dark.
