Marvel's Runaways Premiere: 7 Ups & 1 Down From The First Three Episodes
5. The Humor
Since Runaways absolutely nails the upbeat, high school tone, it only stands to reason that the show should be exceptionally funny. And it definitely delivers on that front as well.
Much of the banter and general interaction between the characters is absolutely hilarious. Such moments from the first three episodes include Chase and Gert's constant bickering, Molly's naive reactions to the world around her, or the Runaways' various attempts to cover their tracks in the midst of learning their parents' secret (such as staging a game of Twister or Alex and Nico's awkward attempt at faking an intimate moment.)
Like other Marvel shows, Runaways turns into the skid when it comes to some of its more outlandish and, for lack of a better term, comic book-ish elements. If something seems silly or far-fetched, characters will directly call it out.
Ultimately, it's a show that takes itself seriously enough to tell a coherent, emotional story, but doesn't take itself so seriously that the actors and viewers aren't allowed to have fun. In fact, it's quite the contrary.
