Marvel's The Defenders Review: 5 Ups And 7 Downs

3. It Lacks A Great Individual Villain

The Defenders Sigourney Weaver Alexandra
Netflix/EW

Sigourney Weaver's Alexandra is another character who starts off quite strongly, but again ultimately falls by the wayside.

There's an interesting air of mystique to the character at first, and Weaver brings a real presence to the screen, but it gradually fades away before she herself is killed off.

She spends as much time squabbling with her fellow fingers as she does taking the fight to the Defenders, and there's not enough done to mark her out as the biggest and baddest threat any of these heroes have faced yet.

One of the reasons Daredevil Season 1, Jessica Jones, and the first half of Luke Cage worked so well was each had an incredibly compelling, complex villain. A show shouldn't just be as good as its Big Bad, but we've seen how much it helps in this universe, and it's very much lacking here, with no one stepping into her void once she is killed off either.
