Last month, a bomb dropped that took everyone by surprise: Despite years of development and a publicized spot on Marvel Studios' slate, the film adaptation of Inhumans was no longer on the horizon for the foreseeable future. Instead, the story of the Royal Family of Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, and more would become a limited series, with the first two episodes premiering in IMAX theaters next September ahead of the rest of the 8-episode season airing weekly on ABC, all of which be overseen by Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck.

Inhumans have been a part of the MCU since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s second season, but the Royal Family have not, and considering that the belief has always been that the planned film would tell their tale, there's much buzz about how important the series will be. Though, apparently, it will not affect the film, which is still going to happen at some point.

That makes it all the more a mystery about what that project could ultimately be about - and since it will not be considered a spin-off of S.H.I.E.L.D., it's a big move on Marvel's part, one whose strategic success can hopefully help bridge the gap between the films and TV. With the X-Men rights firmly in the clutches of Fox, The Inhumans can easily serve as Marvel's way of making up for it.
