Marvel's Iron Fist Season 2: What Does The Ending Really Mean?
4. ... And It Might Have Always Been Her Destiny
Collen's subplot through season 2 sees her trying to work out how a box bearing the Wing family crest ended up in New York. Eventually it's revealed her mother is possibly still alive, as she hears of the fairy tale of the Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay that only she and her mum knew.
However, in the finale Danny tells Colleen in his "Dear John" letter that he actually heard of the tale from K'un-Lun and on the back of the Wing crest is the symbol of Shou-Lao the Undying. Yes, Colleen's ancestor was in fact Wu Ao-Shi, the first ever woman to become the immortal Iron Fist. As Danny goes on to suggest, he may only have got the Fist himself and later bumped into Colleen in order to pass the power onto her, making it her destiny instead of his.
This is a smart bit of recalibrating the comics backstory to counteract the audience's, let's face it, indifference towards Danny as a character. Now the show is about Colleen's hero journey instead!
