In the original teaser that followed the conclusion of the Defenders, a scene featured a brief look at the murder of an anonymous woman. At the time, we speculated that this could've been a random killing, instigated by Frank's old unit who again, feature heavily throughout this new one.

Turns out, however, that the woman in question is Mrs Castle, which doesn't really make all that much sense unless the sequence in question takes place in Frank's head. Unless Netflix are in the market for a jarring and abrupt ret-con (which would be a first for the MCU), then it's the only possible explanation for the scene - we know Frank's mother and daughter were murdered during the Central Park Massacre.

And yet, Castle can be heard later in the trailer saying "they killed my family to get to me", which - if you're a Punisher fan - should be sounding alarm bells in your head. The whole point of the character's being is that his family were taken by a senseless and random act of violence - Castle takes to the streets yes, to satiate his desire for revenge and violence, but also to ensure that no such event could possibly end up repeating itself, depriving another family of a life long-lived.

If it does indeed turn out that their murders were orchestrated, it somewhat eliminates one of the most compelling aspects of the character's origin. We hope that's not the case - because the series genuinely looks brilliant - but the trailer didn't really do a good job of clarifying that element.

To the series' credit, Garth Ennis' The Cell followed this exact premise in revealing there was more to the Castle murders than once thought, but still, it feels like an unnecessary change and a bolted-on one at that.
