We know for a fact that the upcoming solo series will be spending as much time in the present as it does in the past, with multiple set photos and segments from the two successive trailers having shown plainly that this is, indeed, the case.

The focus of Frank's military career will centre around his time spent in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, but it looks as though he won't be working with a traditional military unit. Instead, his comrades are outfitted in black balaclavas, and - by this point in the series - it looks as though things have all gone a little pear-shaped, what with all the blood and shaky-cam going around.

We also know that William Rawlins (played in the series by Paul Schulze) will be taking on a key role as the series' villain, and is very much the one doing the torturing in this scene. John Bernthal's narration makes specific note of Castle's time spent working for a "covert CIA operation", and Rawlins - being the leader - very much wants him dead; this footage could just be the proof Frank and Micro need to bring him down.

Only time will tell as to what, exactly, triggered Castle's defection from the group, but if it follows on from what happened in the comics, then the series will be treading an especially dark path, inspired by the runs of Garth Ennis and Baron.
